The Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation office is located in Madison – an area of Wisconsin that sustained the Ho-Chunk Nation since long before recorded history. The “People of the Sacred Voice” (also known as Hocąk, Hoocągra) called this ancestral land Teejop (Four Lakes). An 1832 Treaty forced the Ho-Chunk to cede three million acres of territory, including Teejop, to the relatively newly formed United States of America. Decades of ethnic cleansing followed when both the federal and state government repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, sought to forcibly remove the Ho-Chunk from Wisconsin.
We acknowledge the Ho-Chunk Nation’s legacy of resilience forged by their forced removal from ancestral lands. We recognize and respect the inherent sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation and all 12 Native Nations within the boundaries of the state of Wisconsin.
