Wisconsin Help for Homeowners Legal Services
The coronavirus pandemic caused unprecedented disruptions in the lives of millions of Wisconsin residents. The resulting job loss, illness and other challenges caused many homeowners to fall behind on their mortgages. In partnership with the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association (WISCAP), WisTAF developed and administers the civil legal aid component of the Wisconsin Help for Homeowners (WHH) program. With federal pandemic recovery funds from the American Rescue Plan Act Homeowner Assistance Fund, civil legal services agencies in this WisTAF grant program have helped hundreds of eligible homeowners find legal solutions to maintain safe and stable housing. Homeowners facing the loss of their home were referred for legal assistance by a network of community action programs through the state.
Since the program was launched in 2022, WisTAF's WHH grantees have helped to prevent unecessary foreclosures for hundreds of Wisconsin families in 65 counties. WisTAF grantees have received a total of $1,542,749.58 in reimbursements for the legal services they provided to eligible homeowners since the start of the program. The cumulative monetary value of the outcomes obtained for WHH Legal Services Program clients has surpassed $100 million.
